A Student Responds to Parenting Coach Training After One Class:

I received my copy of “The Pocket Coach for Parents” less than 48 hours ago.  I’ll be honest that with only a couple hours until class starts, I have not gotten all the way through the book, but there is no doubt in my mind that I will finish it tonight…and then begin re-reading it.  I honestly didn’t know what to expect, but didn’t expect to get something out of this book personally.  My children do not have any diagnoses – and as a clinician I don’t believe they fit a diagnosis — but one of my children has the ability to take my  patience, previous experience, and knowledge of child development and parenting and chew it up and spit it out for breakfast before I even know what has happened.  “Why?” my psychologist husband and I would say to ourselves, “can’t we figure out how to address her behavior?”

I love the formula for providing heartfelt appreciation.  I tried it yesterday on one of my children and while I aspire to be the mom that “catches them being good” as a habit, I often fall.  My “catch them being good” phrases didn’t seem to have the all-out punch that Tina’s formula provides when given to a child.  When I noticed that one of my children had put away her outdoor gear – something we have talked about a lot – I utilized Tina’s formula for acknowledging her success.  Ella glowed.  It was like her whole aura or spirit or something that I cannot communicate via words just lit up.  Not only did it have that positive effect on Ella, but the other twin – who did not put her things away – witnessed all of this and was given a second-hand reminder, of sorts, to put her things away.  I was able to send her a message about her behavior without having to nag her/yell at her, etc.

I did not expect to get so much out of this book and [parent coach training] as a mom as I already am.  I feel like I could gush about the present moment approach to parenting and how much that speaks to me in asking me to forgive myself for all the bad days I’ve had as a parent, and let go of all the worry of what those bad days might do to my children’s future self-esteem.  And the validation I felt when I read that other parents wake up thinking something to the effect of “how am I going to make it through another day” with child X was a bit jarring.   This morning I woke up and tried the thought, “What can I do to expand on Sophia’s successes today?”  While I didn’t have an answer, the question served as a reminder that I have a new parenting approach to try.  It awakened in me a conscious effort on my part to shift my parenting and reminded me there is hope.  And having hope is a great way to start a day.
